chaplaincy は chaplain「牧師・司祭補」+ -cy「職・身分」。chaplain は古フランス語経由で中世ラテン語 cappellanus にさかのぼり、語源は cappa「外套」で、chapel や cap と同根。もとは聖遺物の外套を守る聖職者で、そこから牧師職の意味になった。
