解説 Definition
中世の騎士修道会などで、指揮官や管理者の管轄下に置かれた管区・拠点・領地を指します。また、そのような組織上の管轄区域や職位を指すこともあります。
A commandery is an area, estate, or local center controlled by a military or religious order, especially in history. It was often managed by a commander and served as an administrative base. The word is mainly used in historical discussions rather than everyday English.

commandery はフランス語 commanderie を経て、後期ラテン語 commendaria、さらにラテン語 commendare「委ねる・任せる」にさかのぼります。com-「共に」と mandare「託す」が核で、command や commend と同根のため、「任されて管理する区域」が管区・騎士団領地になった語です。
Commandery came into English through French commanderie, from Late Latin commendaria. It goes back to Latin commendare, meaning "to entrust" or "place in someone's care," built from com- and mandare, "to commit" or "order." The idea is of a place or district put under someone's charge, which is how it became the name for an administrative or knightly territory. Related English words include command and commend.
