coolie の語源・成り立ち Etymology
語源には諸説ありますが、英語にはヒンディー語・ウルドゥー語 quli「雇い人」またはタミル語 kuli「賃金・日雇い賃」から入ったとされます。だから元は「賃金で働く人」ですが、植民地期に特定の労働者を蔑視して呼ぶ語へ変わりました。関連形に quli、cooly があります。
`Coolie` entered English in the colonial period, probably from Hindi or Urdu `quli` meaning a hired worker, or from Tamil `kuli` meaning wages or hire. The original sense was simply a person working for pay. Over time, in colonial use, it became a label for certain laborers and then took on a strongly insulting and degrading sense.
