The dorsum is the back or upper surface of a body part. In medicine and biology, it is often used for the back of the hand, foot, tongue, or body. This is a technical word mainly used in scientific or medical contexts.

dorsal（背側の）を知っていると覚えやすい語で、dorsum はその名詞版、「背中側の面」そのもの。サメの dorsal fin が“背びれ”だと思い出せれば、dors- には「背」の感覚があると定着する。解剖では back 全体というより「ある部位の背側の表面」を指し、hand/foot では palm や sole の反対側、つまり手の甲・足の甲になる点が重要。dorsal, dorsiflexion とまとめて覚えると混同しにくい。
Connect it to `dorsal`, as in `dorsal fin` on a shark. The `dors-` part gives the idea of the back side, and `dorsum` is the noun for that surface. In anatomy, it often means the back of a hand or foot, not just the whole back.

dorsum はラテン語で「背・背中」そのものを意味し、分解できる接辞はほぼない。身体を前後で見たときの「後ろ側の面」という基本感覚から、解剖学で背部を指す語になった。dorsal や dorsiflexion も同根で、どちらも「背側へ」の発想を残す。
Dorsum comes directly from Latin, where it meant "back" or "ridge." It is not usually broken into smaller meaningful parts in English etymology. The basic sense of the back side of the body later became a technical term in anatomy. Related words such as dorsal and dorsiflexion keep the same idea of the back side.
