解説 Definition
脊髄を包む硬膜の外側に麻酔薬を入れる麻酔法、またはその処置そのものを指す名詞です。出産時の痛みの緩和や手術時の麻酔として使われることが多く、医療現場や説明文では冠詞を伴って a/an epidural の形でもよく現れます。
A medical procedure in which an anesthetic is introduced outside the membrane surrounding the spinal cord. It is commonly used to relieve pain during childbirth or to provide anesthesia for surgery.

epi-は「表面・外側」を連想。epidermis（表皮）を知っていれば、「何かの表面側にある」という感覚で入れやすいです。duralは硬膜に関する形なので、epiduralはまとめて「硬膜の外側」と押さえると実用的。実際にはepidural anesthesia / epidural injectionの形で出会うことが多く、出産時の麻酔の場面と結びつけると定着しやすいです。subdural（硬膜下）とは位置が逆で、epi=外、sub=下を対比で覚えると混同しにくく、spinalより“外側”という感覚も残せます。

epiduralはepi-「上に」+ dural「硬膜の」から成り、duraはラテン語durus「硬い」にさかのぼります。つまり直訳は「硬い膜の上の」で、麻酔が脊髄そのものではなく硬膜の外側に入ることが語形から分かり、epidermisやdurableも親類です。
