解説 Definition
人・物・出来事などをまとめて「全部」「何もかも」を表す代名詞です。個々の項目を一つずつ挙げずに対象全体を指すときに使います。文法上は単数扱いになるのが基本で、状況全体について「すべて順調だ」のようにも用いられます。
Everything means all things, without leaving anything out. It is used when talking about the whole of a situation, group, or set of objects. It is a general word and is very common in everyday English.

every + thing と見ると覚えやすい語です。thing は「物・こと」なので、「一つひとつの thing を every で残らず拾う」感覚で「すべて」。everyone / everybody / everywhere と同じ every- の仲間として並べると記憶に残ります。会話では Everything is OK. や Everything changed. のように、細かく列挙せず状況全体をまとめて言う場面で頻出。文法上は単数扱いなので is などを取る点に注意。all は他の語を修飾できますが、everything はそれだけで「全部」を表す代名詞です。人だけなら everyone を使います。

everything は every + thing から成る。every は古英語で「いつでも」の ever と「各々」の語が結びついた形で、everybody や everywhere も同じ every- をもつ。原義は「残らず各々の物」で、全体を取りこぼさず包む感じが「すべて」につながる。
"Everything" is made from "every" and "thing." "Every" developed in Old English from forms related to "ever" and the idea of "each," so the whole word originally meant something like "each thing without exception." Related forms such as "everybody" and "everywhere" show the same pattern of total inclusion.
