考えや感情を言葉でうまく表現できず、話し方も明瞭でない状態を表す形容詞。緊張や怒りで言葉が詰まる場合にも使われ、口下手で自分の思いを十分に伝えられない人や発言を指す。また、要点を整理して話せない様子にも用いられる。

まず核は articulate。「はっきり述べる・明瞭に話す」が分かれば、先頭の in- で逆向きになり、「うまく言葉にできない」と取りやすい。単に silent のように黙っているだけでなく、言いたいことはあるのに言語化が崩れる感じ。become inarticulate with anger / fear のように、怒りや緊張で言葉が詰まる場面でよく使う。発音が不明瞭な場合にも使えるが、知性が低いという意味ではない点を分けて覚えると定着しやすい。
