Januaryはローマ神話の双面神ヤヌス（Janus）に由来するラテン語Januariusから。Janusは「門・入口」を意味するjanuaと同根で、始まりと終わりを司る神として年の最初の月に名付けられた。関連語にjanitor（門番→管理人）がある。一年の「入口」の月という発想である。
