january の語源・成り立ち Etymology
Januaryはローマ神話の双面神ヤヌス（Janus）に由来するラテン語Januariusから。Janusは「門・入口」を意味するjanuaと同根で、始まりと終わりを司る神として年の最初の月に名付けられた。関連語にjanitor（門番→管理人）がある。一年の「入口」の月という発想である。
This phrase combines words from different sources. "Check" came into English through chess language and goes back to Persian "shah," meaning "king"; "email" is a modern shortening of "electronic mail"; and "please" comes from French and Latin "placere," meaning "to please." Together, the phrase developed naturally as a polite modern way to ask someone to look at their electronic messages.
