A kiloton is a unit equal to 1,000 tons. It is often used to measure the power of an explosion, especially nuclear weapons, or the weight of very large amounts of material. In news and science contexts, it usually refers to explosive force.

kilo- は kilogram, kilometer と同じく「1000」の感覚で押さえると覚えやすい。ton が「トン」なので、kiloton はまず「1000トン級の量・威力」とまとまる。特にこの語は普通の荷物の重さより、nuclear explosion や bomb yield など爆発規模をTNT換算で述べる場面で出やすい。yield measured in kilotons のように見たら単位表現だと判断する。megaton はその1000倍なので、kilo → mega とスケール比較で覚えると定着しやすい。
