解説 Definition
複数の分子が共有結合ではなく、水素結合や静電相互作用などの比較的弱い力で集まってできる構造や性質に関することを表す形容詞。化学では、分子を超えた集合体やその振る舞いを説明するときに用いる。
Supramolecular means relating to structures made from two or more molecules that are held together by weak forces rather than ordinary chemical bonds. This is a technical term used mainly in chemistry and materials science.

molecular（分子の）を土台に、「supra- が付くと個々の分子を一段上からまとめて見る」と覚える。焦点は1個の分子の内部構造ではなく、分子どうしが水素結合などでゆるく集まり、全体としてどう振る舞うか。supramolecular chemistry / supramolecular assembly の形でよく出る。macromolecular が“巨大な1分子”寄りなのに対し、こちらは“複数分子の集合体”を扱う語、と対比すると混同しにくい。
Start from `molecular`, then add `supra-`, which means above or beyond. That gives the idea of looking not at one molecule, but at how several molecules come together. Compare it with `macromolecular`, which is more about one very large molecule.

supra-はラテン語supra「上に・超えて」、molecularはmolecule＋-arで「分子の」。つまり「個々の分子を超えたレベルの」という成り立ちで、supranationalやmoleculeを知ると、分子同士の集合や相互作用を扱う語だと腑に落ちる。
Supramolecular is formed from supra-, Latin for "above" or "beyond," and molecular, from molecule plus -ar. It literally means "beyond the molecular level." The word came to describe things made from or involving groups of molecules and their interactions rather than single molecules alone.
