chemistry は chemist + -ry からできた語で、語幹は古フランス語・中世ラテン語経由でアラビア語 al-kimiya「錬金術」に連なります。物質が反応し合う学問名から転じて、人どうしが自然に引き合う感じも chemistry と言うようになり、「相性」の意味が生まれました。関連語は chemical, alchemy。
Chemistry comes from chemist plus the ending -ry. Its older root goes back through Old French and Medieval Latin to Arabic al-kimiya, meaning "alchemy." From the study of how substances act and react, the word later also developed the meaning of natural attraction between people.
