ミサや礼拝で司祭・聖職者のそばに立ち、ろうそくや祭具の運搬、所作の補助を担う侍者。単なる一般助手ではなく、祭壇周りの正式な役割を指すのが中心で、ここから忠実な追随者の比喩義が生まれた。
An acolyte is someone who follows and strongly supports a leader, group, or idea. In religious contexts, it can also mean a person who helps in a ceremony or service. In general use, the word can suggest loyalty and close connection.
