kilowatt は電力の単位で、1,000ワットを表す語です。日本語の「キロワット」とほぼ同じ意味で、機器の出力や電力消費を示すときに使います。

kilo- は単位で「1000倍」、watt は電力の単位なので、kilowatt はそのまま「1000ワット」です。1 kW = 1,000 W と式で覚え、a one-kilowatt heater や a five-kilowatt motor のように機器の消費電力・出力と結び付けます。電力量の kilowatt-hour とは区別します。

Link the unit to familiar equipment, such as a one-kilowatt heater or a five-kilowatt motor. A kilowatt measures power, meaning the rate at which energy is used or produced. Do not confuse it with a kilowatt-hour, which measures an amount of energy accumulated over time. The same kilo- relationship appears in kilometer and kilogram.

kilo- はギリシャ語 khilioi「千」由来で、近代語を経て単位名につく接頭辞になりました。watt は発明家 James Watt にちなむ語で、千ワットを表すので kilowatt は「1000倍のワット」と納得できます。関連語は kilogram, kilometer.
Kilowatt combines the metric prefix kilo-, meaning “one thousand,” with watt, the SI-derived unit of power. Kilo- ultimately comes from Greek khilioi, “a thousand.” The watt was named after Scottish engineer and inventor James Watt in recognition of his work on steam-engine technology. The compound therefore transparently means one thousand watts and is commonly abbreviated as kW.
