ラテン語 mos/moris「習慣・作法」から出た moralis「道徳の」が土台で、im- は否定、-ity は性質を表します。つまり「共同体の作法から外れた状態」で、不道徳の感覚が見えます。関連語は moral、morale。
Immorality comes from im- "not," moral, and -ity. Moral goes back to Latin moralis, from mos or moris, meaning "custom" or "way of behaving." The idea is of being outside the accepted customs or standards of a community; moral and morale come from the same root.
