電力などの仕事率を表す単位。電球や電気製品の消費電力を示す際によく使われる。
A unit of power equal to one joule of energy transferred per second. It is commonly used to state how much electrical power a bulb or appliance uses.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
watt は電力などの仕事率を表す単位で、記号は W です。電球が使う電力には use ten watts、スピーカーの出力には an output of fifty watts のように使います。数値が複数なら watts としますが、a 10-watt bulb のように名詞を前から説明するときは単数形 watt になります。
Picture an appliance label showing "60 W," and connect the capital W with watt. One watt means one joule per second, so think of how quickly energy is used or transferred. Keep it separate from a watt-hour, which measures an amount of energy.
