1960年に造られた頭字語で、Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation（誘導放出による光の増幅）の略。各単語はラテン語・ギリシャ語由来で、lux（光）、amplare（広げる）、emittere（放出する）などが語源。元は技術用語だが日常語として定着した。
Laser was formed as an acronym from Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The name became established around the development of the first working lasers in 1960 and followed the earlier model maser, which uses microwave rather than light radiation. Because the acronym quickly became a common noun, English now normally writes it in lowercase and forms its plural regularly as lasers.
