中英語 lempet を経て、古英語 lempedu、さらに中世ラテン語 lampreda に由来するとされます。もとはヤツメウナギ系の語でしたが、岩に吸いついて離れない性質の連想からカサガイにも使われるようになりました。関連語は lamprey。
Limpet came through Middle English lempet and Old English lempedu, probably from Medieval Latin lampreda. That earlier word originally referred to the lamprey. Over time, the name was applied to the shellfish because of its strong clinging habit, and lamprey is a related English word.
