Manilaはスペイン語Manilaを経て、タガログ語Maynilaに由来します。may「〜がある」+ nila「藍」に分かれ、もとは「藍のある場所」という地名で、土地の名がそのまま英語に入りました。関連語はMaynila、manila paperです。
The English place name Manila came through Spanish Manila from Tagalog Maynila. The Tagalog form is traditionally divided into may, meaning “there is” or “having,” and a second element associated with nila, referring to indigo or an indigo-producing plant.
