batch は古英語 bacan「焼く」につながる語で、もとは「一回で焼き上げたパンの一まとまり」を指したと考えられる。接辞よりも bake 系の語根が中心で、焼き釜一回分という感覚から「一群・一回分」へ広がった。bake や baker も同じ根を持つ。
Batch is related to bake and goes back to the same old Germanic root seen in Old English bacan. It probably first meant the amount of bread or other goods baked in one oven load.
