ream は紙の「連」を表し、中世フランス語 rasme を経てアラビア語 rizma「束・包み」にさかのぼります。もともと一枚ではなく「ひとまとめの紙」を数える語で、単位になったのも自然です。フランス語 rame やスペイン語 resma にも同じ商業語の流れが見えます。
Ream comes from Middle French rasme, which ultimately goes back to Arabic rizma, meaning "bundle" or "package." It was used in trade for a wrapped quantity of paper rather than for single sheets. From that commercial sense, it became the standard word for a fixed paper unit in English. Related forms can be seen in French rame and Spanish resma.
