Multiscale describes something that involves more than one level of size, time, or detail. It is often used in science, engineering, and data analysis when a system is studied at small and large scales together. The word shows that one scale alone is not enough to explain the whole thing.

multi- は multimedia, multilingual などと同じで「複数の」、scale は large-scale / small-scale の scale で「規模・尺度」。つまり multiscale は「一つの対象を、拡大して細部を見る視点と、引いて全体を見る視点の両方で扱う」イメージ。multiscale analysis, multiscale modeling, multiscale structure などで出やすい。large-scale が「大規模」寄りなのに対し、multiscale は「大きい小さいをまたぐ複数レベル」が核だと押さえると残りやすい。
