An overtone is a higher natural sound that is heard together with the main musical note. In a wider sense, it can also mean a hidden quality or slight suggestion in speech, writing, or a situation. This second meaning is common in expressions like political overtones or emotional overtones.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
over + tone で「音の上に乗る音」と分解すると覚えやすいです。まず tone は単なる1つの音色・音、そこに over が付くと、基音の上に重なって鳴る追加成分だとイメージできます。楽器ごとの音色の違いを作るのが overtone。音が豊か・明るい・金属的に聞こえるときは overtones を意識すると定着しやすいです。似た形の undertone は「下にある響き・含み」で別物なので混同注意。
