接頭辞over-（上に）とラテン語tonus由来のtoneの合成語で、ドイツ語Obertoneから英語へ定着した。基本音の上に響く成分という構成が、物理用語「倍音」の意味をそのまま物語っている。同根語にmonotone（単調）やintonation（抑揚）がある。

English adopted the acoustical term under the influence of German Oberton, literally a tone above another tone.
