intonation は日本語でも使う「イントネーション」、つまり発話中の声の高さの上がり下がりです。語中の ton を tone（音・声調）と結びつけ、「文全体にどんな高低の線を描くか」と考えると定着しやすいです。stress が特定の音節を強く目立たせるのに対し、intonation は句や文にわたる音程の動きだと区別します。rising intonation は上昇調、falling intonation は下降調。A rising intonation can make a statement sound like a question. のように、同じ語順でも語尾を上げると質問らしく聞こえる場面で固定しましょう。

intonation は後期ラテン語 intonare に由来し、in-『強く・中へ』+ tonare『鳴り響く、雷鳴をとどろかす』からできています。intone や detonate と同じ ton 系で、声をどう鳴らして意味や感情を乗せるかと考えると、『イントネーション』の役割がよく見えます。
Intonation comes from Late Latin intonare, from in- and tonare, meaning "to thunder" or "resound." It first carried the idea of sounding out strongly or giving voice with a particular tone. From there it developed into the modern sense of the rise and fall of the voice in speech; related words include intone and detonate.
