undertone は英語内の複合語で、古英語 under「下に」と、tone（古フランス語経由でラテン語 tonus、さらにギリシャ語 tonos「張り・音調」）から成る。表に出た音の“下で鳴る調子”が転じて、言外の含みや底流の気配を表す。関連語は monotone、intonation。
Undertone was formed in English from under and tone. Tone came through Old French from Latin tonus, which goes back to Greek tonos, meaning "stretching" or "tone." It first suggested a sound running underneath another sound, and later grew into the idea of a hidden feeling or quiet background meaning.
