A stewardess is a woman whose job is to care for passengers on an airplane. This word was common in the past, but it is now less common in modern English. Today, people usually say flight attendant because it is more neutral.

stewardess は steward に女性を表す接尾辞 -ess が付いた語で、steward 自体は古英語 stigweard「家・食糧庫を守る人」にさかのぼります。ward や warden も同じ「守る」の根を持ち、もとは「客や備品を取り仕切る人」だったと分かると役割の広がりが見えます。
Stewardess was formed from steward with the female suffix -ess. Steward goes back to Old English stigweard, meaning a person who watched over a household or store, and it shares the root of ward and warden. From the older sense of managing and guarding supplies or guests, the word later came to be used for a woman serving in that role.
