social はラテン語 socius「仲間」に由来し、そこに -ize「〜にする」と -ation「行為」が加わってできた語です。原義は「仲間の一員にしていくこと」で、そこから人と関係を築き、社会の中で通用する振る舞いを身につける「社交化・社会化」の意味になりました。関連語は society, associate。
