Stratigraphy is the study of layers of rock, soil, or other material, and the order in which they were formed. It is used in geology and archaeology to understand the history of the earth or a site. The main idea is that different layers can show different periods of time.

strata（複数の層）や stratify（層に分ける）を知っていると核は「層」。そこに geography, biography でも見る -graphy が付くので、「層を記述して順序を読む学問」とつながる。ポイントは geology が地球・岩石全般なのに対し、stratigraphy は layer by layer で地層の上下関係や年代の前後を追うこと。『どんな岩石か』より『どの層がどの順で積もったか』に意識を置くと定着しやすい。
