plug
プラグ
解説 Definition
plug は、電気器具のコードの先についていてコンセントに差し込む「プラグ」という意味です。英語では栓や差し込み口をふさぐ物にも使われるため、日本語のカタカナ語より少し広い意味があります。
A plug is the part at the end of an electrical cord that has metal pins and is inserted into a socket to connect equipment to a power supply. More generally, it can be an object used to block an opening.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
日本語の「プラグ」と同じく、コードの先を wall socket に差し込む部品をまず思い浮かべる。語の核は「穴に差し込んでふさぐ物」なので、電気以外にも bath plug や earplug に広がる。pull out the plug、insert the plug、plug and socket を場面ごと覚えるとよい。
Picture the part at the end of a lamp cord being inserted into a wall socket. That is the electrical plug used in the examples. The older, broader idea is an object pushed into an opening, usually to close or fill it; this also appears in bath plug and earplug. Learn practical combinations such as insert the plug, pull out the plug, and plug and socket. Remember that the plug is normally the projecting part on the cord, while the socket is the fixed opening that receives it.
例文
Put the plug into the wall socket.

I pulled out the plug before cleaning the lamp.
ランプを掃除する前にプラグを抜きました。

plug の語源・成り立ち Etymology
plug は中英語に入り、もとをたどるとオランダ語・低地ドイツ語系の plugge「栓」にさかのぼるゲルマン系語です。もともと穴をふさぐ「栓」の発想なので、earplug や plughole にも共通して、差し込んで塞ぐものが「プラグ」です。
Plug entered Middle English from a Germanic source, probably related to Middle Dutch plugge and words in Low German meaning a peg, stopper, or bung. Its earliest physical sense centered on something inserted into a hole to block it. The electrical meaning developed naturally when a fitted piece inserted into a socket became part of an electrical connection. The same concrete idea remains visible in compounds such as earplug and plughole, even though their functions differ.
