Break pornography into porno- and -graphy. The second part comes from a Greek element meaning “writing” or “representation,” also seen in photography and geography. In modern English, pornography is the formal, usually uncountable noun for sexually explicit material intended mainly to produce arousal; porn is its shorter, less formal equivalent. Connect it with the adjective pornographic, as in pornographic material. Do not automatically equate it with erotica: erotica often suggests artistic or literary sexual content, whereas pornography more strongly emphasizes explicit depiction and sexual stimulation, though judgments about the boundary can vary.

Pornography was formed from Greek pornē, “prostitute,” and graphia, “writing or description,” from graphein, “to write.” Pornē is traditionally connected with pernēmi, “to sell,” reflecting the historical idea of a person sold or offering sexual services. The term entered nineteenth-century European scholarly usage for writings or representations concerning prostitution and later broadened to mean sexually explicit material. The shortened form porn and the adjective pornographic developed from the same modern word family.
