chaotic は chaos「混沌」に形容詞語尾 -ic が付いた語です。chaos や chaotically と同根で、もとはギリシャ語 khaos「裂け目・ぽっかり開いた空虚」に由来し、“秩序立つ前の空白状態”から「混沌とした」になりました。
Chaotic comes from chaos with the adjective ending -ic. Chaos came into English through Latin and Greek, from Greek khaos, which first meant a gap, chasm, or empty space.
