possessive はラテン語 possessivus に由来し、さらに possidere「席を占めて持つ」へさかのぼる。potis「力のある」+ sedere「座る」が核で、possess や possession も同根。「そこに座り込んで自分の物にする」感覚から、所有的なの意味になる。
