覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
remedy「治療法・救済策」の複数形。子音字+yで終わるため、yをiに替えて-esを付け、remediesとなる。発音は/ˈremədiz/で語末は「ディーズ」に近い。remedies for a problem、home remedies、legal remediesと覚え、病気への治療法から法律上の救済手段まで含むと整理する。
Remedies is the plural of remedy, a method for making a bad situation better. Remember three common settings: remedies for a problem, home remedies for minor illness, and legal remedies for harm or unfair treatment. These share one core idea—providing a means of correction or relief. For the plural, a noun ending in consonant plus y changes y to i and adds -es: remedy becomes remedies. The final sound is /z/, giving the pronunciation /ˈremədiz/. Do not restrict the word to medicine, because reports, policies, and courts can also propose or provide remedies.

remedies の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語remedium(re-「再び」+ mederi「治す」)が古フランス語を経て英語に入った。「再び健康な状態に戻す手段」が原義で、医療・法律両方の文脈で使われる。関連語:remedy(治療する)、medical(医療の、同根のmederiから)。
Remedy came into English through Old French from Latin remedium, a word for a cure, relief, or corrective measure. The Latin form is associated with mederi, meaning “to heal.” Its medical sense is therefore old, but English also extended the word to anything that corrects a difficulty and to legal means of obtaining relief for a wrong. Remedies is the regular plural formed by changing the final consonant-plus-y sequence in remedy to -ies.
