覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

Renting is the gerund of rent, formed simply by adding -ing. Picture paying for temporary use instead of buying: renting a car, renting a room, or renting equipment. English rent can describe either side of the arrangement—the customer rents something from an owner, while the owner rents it to the customer—so use from and to, or the surrounding context, to identify the direction. Connect renting with rental, which can name the arrangement or rented item and can also modify nouns such as rental car.

renting の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古フランス語rente(収入・地代)からrentが生まれ、ラテン語reddita(返されたもの)が起源。土地や財産の使用料として「返す」お金が原義。関連語:rent(賃貸料)、rental(レンタルの)。「返礼として払うお金」が賃貸の本質。

Renting is formed by adding -ing to rent. Rent came into English from Old French rente, referring to income or a regular payment, and is ultimately connected with Latin reddita, “things returned” or “revenue,” from reddere, “to give back.” The idea developed through payments made for the use of land or property. Modern renting extends that arrangement to homes, vehicles, tools, equipment, and many other temporary uses.
