古フランス語 rente（収入、地代）を経てラテン語 reddita（返されたもの）に遡る。reddere（返す）＝ re-（戻す）+ dare（与える）の構成。土地を借りた対価として「返すお金」が原義。関連語：render（提供する）、surrender（明け渡す）も同根。
