funkyはfunk＋-yで、funkは方言フランス語を経てラテン語fumigare「煙を出す」にさかのぼるとされる。元は「かび臭い」で、強い匂いから「生々しい味」、さらに「個性的でかっこいい」へ転じた。関連語はfume、funk。
"Funky" comes from funk + -y. Funk is thought to be related, through a French dialect form, to Latin fumigare, meaning "to smoke," and it first referred to a strong, musty smell.
