spunky は spunk「火花・火口」からできた語で、spunk はスコットランド語を経てゲール語系 spong、さらにラテン語 spongia に連なります。小さな火花が比喩的に「気力・度胸」へ育ったため、spunky は「火のある元気さ」を帯び、sponge も同系です。
Spunky was formed from spunk, a word that once meant a spark or tinder. Spunk came through Scots and is related to words of Gaelic and Latin origin, ultimately connected with sponge.
