renter の語源・成り立ち Etymology
renterのrentは古フランス語rente、さらにラテン語reddita「返されたもの」に由来し、-erは「人」を表します。render「差し出す」やsurrender「明け渡す」と同系で、定期的に支払って部屋を使う人という像から借り手の意味になりました。
Renter comes from rent plus the agent ending -er. Rent came through Old French rente and is linked to Latin reddita, meaning "that which is returned" or "paid back." The idea was of a regular payment given in return for use of land or property. Related English words include render and surrender.
