家や部屋、土地、店舗などを所有者から借り、契約に基づいて使用する人を指す。住居の入居者にも商業施設の借り手にも使えるが、日本語の「テナント」より広く、一般に賃借人・借家人の意味で用いられる。

tenant は古フランス語 tenant「保有している者」から入り、さらにラテン語 tenere「持つ・保つ」にさかのぼります。原義は「土地や建物を保持している人」で、そこから借りて入居する人、つまりテナントの意味になりました。関連語に contain、maintain があります。
