17世紀英語の反復語で、のこぎりを前後に引く see-saw という掛け声や動きのまねから生まれた語。そこから上下に交互に動く遊具の名になり、「上がれば下がる」往復運動の感じをそのまま表す。同系の語に zigzag、teeter-totter。
Seesaw began as a 17th-century English reduplicative word, probably based on a repeated cry or motion used when sawing back and forth. Its sound imitates alternating movement.
