18世紀英語の俗語で、語源ははっきりしませんが、古い snitch「鼻先・鼻をつつく」やゲルマン系の sn- 語群にさかのぼると考えられます。snout と同系とみられ、他人のことに鼻を突っ込んで密告する人という感覚から「密告者」になったと捉えると覚えやすい語です。
