解説 Definition

streets は street(通り、街路)の複数形です。町や都市にある複数の道をまとめて言うときに使います。

Streets are public roads in a town or city, typically with buildings along one or both sides. The plural may refer to several individual routes or collectively to the public spaces of an urban area.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

原形 street に複数の -s を付けた形で、語末が無声音 /t/ のため -s は /s/ と発音します。roads が都市間の道路にも使えるのに対し、streets は建物が並ぶ町中の「通り」が中心です。walk through the old streets や quiet streets の場面と結び付けましょう。

Streets is the regular plural of street. Since street ends in the voiceless sound /t/, its plural -s is pronounced /s/. Picture a town map with many named routes, or imagine walking through old streets lined with houses and shops. Street usually suggests an urban road with buildings beside it, whereas road is broader and can also connect towns or cross the countryside. Common combinations such as narrow streets, quiet streets, and city streets make the plural meaning easy to remember.

例文

streets の語源・成り立ち Etymology

streetsはstreetの複数形で、語源は古英語stræt、さらにラテン語strata「舗装された道」にさかのぼります。stratumやstratifyと同じく「敷き広げる」感覚をもつ語根です。石を敷いて整えた道という原義を知ると、「通り」の意味が腑に落ちます。

Streets is formed by adding the plural ending -s to street. Street comes from Old English strǣt, which was borrowed from Late Latin strata, short for strata via, meaning a paved or laid-down road. Strata is related to Latin sternere, “to spread or lay down.” The historical image is therefore a route made by laying a prepared surface.
