覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
名詞・動詞 target「標的、対象にする」に -ing を付けた形で、語末の t は重ねない。広告なら target audience「対象層」を選び、計画なら具体的な目標へ狙いを定める場面を思い浮かべる。単なる到達ではなく「誰・何を対象として選ぶか」が targeting の核。
Start with target, originally a noun for something aimed at, and add -ing without changing the spelling of the base: targeting. Imagine placing a bull’s-eye over the exact audience or goal you want to reach. In advertising, targeting means selecting people with particular locations, interests, or characteristics; in planning, it means directing effort toward a chosen objective. Remember the phrase target audience. The key idea is selection plus focused action, not merely reaching something accidentally. Retargeting adds re- and means directing attention or advertising toward a target again.

targeting の語源・成り立ち Etymology
英語 target はフランス語 targette(小さな盾)に由来し、さらにゲルマン語の targa(盾)が起源。射撃練習で盾を的にしたことから「標的」の意味に転じた。関連語: target(標的)、retarget(再標的化)。-ing は動名詞接尾辞で「標的を定める行為」を表す。
Targeting is formed from the verb target plus the gerund suffix -ing. Target entered English through Old French targette, referring to a small shield, and is connected with Germanic words for a shield. Because shields served as objects to aim at in practice, target developed the sense “object aimed at” and later “chosen objective or group.” In modern advertising and planning, targeting describes the act of deliberately selecting and focusing on such an objective.
