A theropod is a type of dinosaur that usually walked on two legs and was often meat-eating. This group includes famous dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus and also the ancestors of modern birds. The word is mainly used in paleontology.

theropod は学術ラテン語 Theropoda に由来し、もとはギリシャ語 therion「獣」と pod-「足」から成ります。直訳すると「獣のような足をもつもの」で、力強い後肢をもつ恐竜群の名になり、同じ pod- は tripod や podiatry にも見られます。
Theropod comes from scientific Latin Theropoda, formed from Greek therion "beast" and pod- "foot." It originally meant something like "beast-footed." In science, it became the name for a group of dinosaurs known for their strong hind limbs; the same pod- appears in tripod and podiatry.
