theropod は学術ラテン語 Theropoda に由来し、もとはギリシャ語 therion「獣」と pod-「足」から成ります。直訳すると「獣のような足をもつもの」で、力強い後肢をもつ恐竜群の名になり、同じ pod- は tripod や podiatry にも見られます。
