adaptability は adapt＋-ability。adapt は古フランス語 adapter、さらにラテン語 adaptare（合うように整える）にさかのぼり、ad-「〜へ」＋ aptare「適合させる」から成る。『状況に合わせられる性質』がそのまま適応力になった。関連語は adaptive、aptitude。
