advaita の語源・成り立ち Etymology
advaitaはサンスクリット語advaitaに由来し、a-「非・無」+ dvaita「二元性」から成る語です。字義は「二つではない」で、自己と世界を別々の実体と見ない思想名になりました。関連語はdvaita、dual。
Advaita comes from Sanskrit advaita, made from a-, meaning "not," and dvaita, meaning "duality" or "two-ness." Its literal sense is "not two." From that idea, it became the name of a philosophical view that does not treat the self and the world as fully separate realities. A related form is dvaita, and dual is a distant English relative.
