解説 Definition
バリトンは男性の中低音域を担当する声部で、オペラや合唱でよく使われる。テナーより低くバスより高い音域をもち、豊かな響きと温かみが特徴である。この声を持つ歌手や楽器も「バリトン」と呼ばれる。
A baritone is a male singing voice that is lower than a tenor and higher than a bass. The word can also mean a singer with this kind of voice. It is mainly used in music, opera, and choir contexts.

baritone はイタリア語 baritono を経て、ギリシャ語 barytonos に由来する。bary-「重い」+ tonos「音」で、「重みのある声」がそのまま男声の中音域を表すので意味が直感的だ。barycenter は同じ bary-、tone は tonos の仲間。
Baritone came into English through Italian baritono, from Greek barytonos. It joins bary- meaning "heavy" with tonos meaning "tone," so the original sense was a heavy or deep tone. That idea later became the name for a middle male singing voice. Related words include tone and barycenter.
