解説 Definition

イタリア語 tenore、さらにラテン語 tenor「保つこと・持続」が語源で、もとは tenere「保つ」から来る。中世音楽で旋律を“支えて保つ”声部だったため、そこから男性高声部の「テノール」の名になった。関連語は retain, tenacious。
Tenor came from Italian tenore, from Latin tenor, meaning "a holding" or "a continuing." It goes back to the Latin verb tenere, "to hold." In medieval music, the tenor was the part that held or supported the melody, and from there the name became used for the voice type. Related English words include retain and tenacious.
