bombastic は bombast + -ic。bombast はギリシャ語 bombyx「蚕・絹」由来の bombax「綿」を経た語で、bombast と bombazine も同根です。もとは『詰め物の綿』なので、bombastic は『中身以上にふくらんだ言い方』を表します。
Bombastic comes from bombast + -ic. Bombast originally meant "cotton stuffing" and goes back through Greek bombyx and related forms linked with silk or cotton. Because stuffing makes something look bigger than it is, bombastic came to describe language that sounds swollen or overblown. A related English word is bombazine.
