boronは borax「ホウ砂」に元素名でよく使われる語尾 -on を付けた語で、borax はアラビア語 buraq、さらにペルシア語 burah にさかのぼる。つまり「ホウ砂の成分だから boron」で、borax や boric に同じ bor- が残る。
